Architectural
designs from the 1930s are inspire the Snøhetta’s proposal for the
reconstruction of the venerable Knubben harbour bath in Arendal, Norway. The iconic
facility is to be revived as a gift to the city ahead of its 300th
anniversary in 2023. Originally used by the Arendal Swimming Club for diving
competitions, swim training and other water activities, it closed its doors in
1947, only to open as a jazz club in the 1960s. After substantial decay, the
diving platform was demolished by the Norwegian Armed Forces in 1980. In 2018,
Snøhetta was contracted to revitalise the facility with a feasibility study.
The new Knubben is interpreted as an architectural response to the past, preserving
vital parts to be memorialised, while at the same time emphasising the Arendal’s
status as an urban destination for national and international audiences. The
facility will accommodate an outdoor stage alongside a sculptural amphitheatre,
creating a setting for all kinds of performances.
