South African studio SAOTA has completed its first project in Russia by handing over Silver Pine, a luxury residence in Moscow, designed in collaboration with ARRCC, Max Kasymov and OKHA, the project responds to its unusual setting within a swathe of pine trees on an island on the Moskva River.
The design concept revolves around contrasts. The street-facing elevation is heavy and protective, underscoring Moscow’s monolithic architectural character, while providing shelter from hot summers and cold winters that can vary 70 degrees between seasons, inviting residents indoors with a cosy glow and dazzling opulent interiors. The rear elevation of the garden, which is light and modern, works in contrast to the heavy façade, and even seems to extend into the landscape. Floor-to-ceiling glazing brings in natural light all year round, while generous terraces and balconies facilitate outdoor living during the warmer months.
As such, the public character of the house provides a contemporary interpretation of the city’s architectural character.
The overall experience suggests that SAOTA has facilitated a new relationship between Russian domestic architecture and its landscape and climate.
