Voltigeurs de Québec Armoury

Rising from the ashes

Located close to the historic neighbourhood of Vieux-Québec, in Canada, the Voltigeurs de Québec Armoury faces the plains of Abraham, where the French and British empires clashed in 1759, changing the course of North American history. A decade after a fire, which caused great damage to the building, the Voltigeurs de Québec Armoury has reopened the public. The aim, following the fire, was for a team of architects to design and carry out reconstruction work that would safeguard the building’s heritage and that would respect the architectural integrity of the original layout, designed by Eugène-Etienne Taché. This reconstruction project also involved the opening of a building to house Les Voltigeurs de Québec Infantry Regiment of the Canadian Forces. The entire restoration process required extensive conservation work to the interior and exterior brick walls and their plaster features, to the wooden doors and windows, as well as, among other things, the construction of a new roof clad in copper.
