Simple, with the tranquil lake in sight and nature serving as a backdrop, the Window on the Lake stands where there once was an old family cottage. It was designed by the Yh2 architecture practice. The entire property has been built in wood, both inside and out and is located just a few metres away from the shores of Lac Plaisant, in the Mauricie region of Quebec. The project embodies the architect’s desire to capture cottage life. In fact, the wooden house, which transmits simplicity and cosiness, enables communion with nature. This is a holiday home. And who would not want to spend the night there, watching the water flowing in the lake and listening to the wind blowing in the trees on windy days? Perched on a grassy carpet, the volume breathes purity and remains in tune with the clearing and the lake. On the building’s exterior, the roof and walls clad in white cedar boards give the property a lighter feel. Also its tall windows enable a deep connection between the interiors and the exterior, primarily on the south side, where the glass provides a direct connection between the lake and the living spaces. It should also be added that in this house the entrance of light is constant. The exposed wooden studs and white painted joists give the property a contrast of shadow and light. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor and, on the second floor, a large open sleeping area, able to fit up to 12 people in total. Simple and pure, this is what defines Window on the Lake.
