Time comes to a standstill when your eyes scan the horizon. This is what happens at the mountaineer’s refuge. The Mountain Refuge, built in San Esteban, Chile, and designed by Gonzalo Iturriaga Arquitectos, is a small cabin, measuring 60-sqm, with a roof, kitchen, bathroom and a bedroom, the essentials for a mountain trek, followed by some rest at the end of the day. The planes and angles, its structure with folds and cuts, allowing views to the exterior, are the main attractions of the house. At one end, we find the bedroom, alongside a storage room for mountaineering equipment, and on the other end is a sitting area where the mountain draws the eye and panoramic views are the stuff of memories. The whole exterior of the house is finished in pine, metallic elements and picture windows. The cabin rests on piles, giving the feeling of suspension, while the building is ventilated on all sides. At the top of the mountain, this is the point of arrival and departure for a mountainous trek.
