Entrudo came about from an idea thought up by Maria and her mother. The brand only recently entered the market. The pair thought of the concept in January last year. In May, they launched the first spring/summer collection. They have dreams. Many. One of them is the brand’s internationalisation. Mother and daughter, a united duo. The mother, Susana Ribeiro, studied fashion design, but does not work in the area; Maria Duarte is in charge of advertising and comes up with ideas for models; and her father, Jorge, has a footwear modelling workshop, and it is he who helps them create their shoes, all of which are made in Felgueiras. The first collection was inspired by the Caretos (masked revellers) and the Carnival of Trás-os-Montes. So Portuguese! Both are big fans of Carnival. And, with a host of colours, they created a unique collection. Then they launched the autumn/winter collection. And others will come!

All their shoes are made of leather, with natural raffia appliqués; bells and fringes; fur and wool (in the warmest collection). Always, applied by hand. The collections have no name, but we know that they are inspired by a Trás-os-Montes tradition. Mother and daughter dared to take a risk in Made in Portugal footwear. They might not have lived in the well-known land of footwear - Felgueiras. They took a risk. And here they are on the market for a year. From both collections already launched there are eight models, which they have interconnected, always, with different materials, while following the same design ethos.

Maria is about to complete her studies in Neurophysiology, in Oporto, and until last Christmas she was in Finland, doing a hospital internship in Turku. Her mother studied fashion design at CITEM in Oporto, went on to work in the area, but about ten years ago she decided to open a computer consumables store, which she manages to this day. And today, it is she who designs the models. Together, they wanted to create a Portuguese footwear brand that stood out from the rest. With Portuguese materials and inspired in the country. The name “Entrudo” (meaning Shrovetide) comes from this very idea, from the Portuguese tradition of the Caretos of Trás-os-Montes. In the future, they want to make their collections available in various physical outlets, in Portugal and, of course, take the brand abroad. Always with quality and tradition. Currently the products are only available for sale through facebook and each pair of shoes sells for around €130. It should be explained that the time it takes to make a pair varies according to the type of product applied, for example: the Lalim, with their applied flowers, take three hours to be produced; the Donai, as well as the Salsa, take two hours to complete; and the Careto, are painted by hand, like the mask of a careto, also require a great deal of time.

Mother and daughter spend less time together, during the week, however, and because distance has never been, nor will it ever be an impediment, they always have many things to do together, such as: reading books, which they then swap with each other; training, to reach the goal of a 10 km race; they share a taste for decoration (mother likes to read decoration magazines). Maria enjoys cooking, travelling, and beyond this volunteers every week at CASA (supporting homelessness) and at an association that helps elderly people living alone. Together they have created a brand; together they will take their brand Entrudo to fruition. This is their wish.
