It was the Breitling brand that took the first Swiss
wristwatch into space. With a vast legacy of history, the company is known for
its cutting-edge stance. Some 60 years after Carpenter’s iconic flight in the Aurora 7 space capsule, Breitling has
presented a piece of that narrative, unknown to most: the watch the astronaut
carried on blast off, the Cosmonaute. Corroded and worn, the object
remained in the archives of the company’s collections. The model that now was
presented to the world contains the circular slide rule for mathematical
calculations and a 24-hour dial, and is a faithful version of the original.
Timelessness is inherent to the watch, although when analysed in detail, modern
adjustments are visible as a result of the passage of time.
