"New Retail” is a business concept and at the same time a new way of
living. In 2019, OFT was invited to work on the design of the K11 Art House,
the main concept theatre at K11 Musea, in Hong Kong. In this experimental
project, the studio created Asia’s first alp life-themed cinema, setting an
example. The K11 is not only a phenomenal art shopping centre in Asia, but also
the world’s first cultural retail destination, known to "Revitalising”,
"Retransforming” and "Recreating” urban humanities, art and culture.
By selecting images from Swiss alp life, OFT wanted to incorporate traditional mountain architecture into a modern retail space, reminding Hong Kong’s inhabitants of their desire for a natural lifestyle. At the entrance, a chandelier composed of multiple round structures echoes with scattered "star lights”. The modern-style lamps are bronze coloured, highlighting the beauty of nostalgia without being limited to traditional aesthetics. Wooden pillars used in mountain architecture connect the lobby, hallway, bar and theatres. A large amount of wood and stone with natural textures are adopted to bring a sense of wear and tear over time. Through this new form of visual balance, the design has shed a new light on the relationship between humanity and nature.
