Mokki Design

Lines with stories

Mónica Pinto lives and works in Lisbon, but it was Galicia, Spain that witnessed her birth in 1977. After discovering that it was the world of the arts that truly fulfilled her, she embarked on her career, while still at a tender age. At 17 she moved to Sintra, Portugal. This is where it all happened. A year later, she opened her own studio – MP Studio. She took courses in Fine Arts, Decorative Painting, Restoration, Faux Effets and Frescos at the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation and at the School of Restoration and Recuperation of Heritage and Design at the National Society of Fine Arts, and since then her imagination is the only limit to her creations. In 2016, she launched Mokki Design - a brand of lighting and pieces of furniture, which she introduces to us in this issue.

Passion for the arts led Monica to launch Mokki Design in 2016. The designer gives importance in such a way to memories, that, without them, it would not be possible for her imagination to allow her to create such distinctive pieces of furniture and lighting. Because it is memory, poetry and shapes, her personal universe, that give rise to her creativity. Much of what you see in Mokki pieces portrays her own personal and multicultural past, whether through lighting design projects or through designer pieces. It is easy to figure out that her artistic training blends with the sensorial universe, which has led her to develop innovative and sculptural pieces, in which each line tells a story. Every passion and emotion is translated into conceptual and architectural pieces. Conceptual memories she has already created include Lorga, a ceiling lamp, inspired by Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), considered one of the great names of 20th-century Spanish literature. Lorga features strong graphic lines that take you to the art of literature. The Cubes, table lamp, unites the natural element, solid wood, to the geometry of the structure, with the balance of its polyhedral shapes.

Passion for the arts led designer Mónica Pinto to launch Mokki Design and to create pieces of unique furniture and lighting.

Colorato, a floor lamp, plays with blending materials and shapes: metallic lacquered iron structure, aluminium hangers and wool decoration. Woods, a ceiling lamp, is based on an idea of woodland, with basic geometric shapes. Tripé is a standing lamp in which each lightshade, hand-painted by designer Mónica Pinto, ensures a one-of-a-kind piece. Piastre, a support piece, is a sequence of overlapping and rotating plates. These are just some of Mónica Pinto’s creations.
In 2018, at the London Design Fair ’18, Mónica launched the Mokki Design brand internationally, with the themes: Sleep In, Porto and Orgatec, Köln. In January 2019, she took three lighting pieces to Maison & Objet, in partnership with Portuguese company WEWOOD Portuguese Joinery. And there is much more is to come.
