OpenBike

To print and assemble at home

A bicycle made of plywood has been created by Basque architecture studio Arquimaña with the aim of making more people focus on sustainability. The open-source design is called Openbike, a 3D model of a bicycle that you can print and assemble yourself. Despite the obvious problems that come with a bike made in this material, it is still an affordable and lightweight alternative for anyone on a budget, but who wants to be ecologically conscious.
To make the bike, you should download the designs from the firm’s website. You can then take them to a digital manufacturing workshop, where a CNC machine can cut out the body of the wooden bike and 3D printing is used for elements such as the saddle, front hub and handles, which can easily be recycled from old bikes.
Openbike’s manufacturing files are licensed under Creative Commons 4.0, allowing the design to be improved, modified, manufactured and shared by anyone, worldwide. The project is part of the global fab city initiative, which challenges cities to produce everything they consume by 2054.
