While Elon Musk reveals Tesla’s vehicles during the launches of his space "spaceships”, Jeff Bezos took advantage of the lift he gave actor William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek series) to the New Shepard capsule, which finally took him to the threshold of space, to show off his pick-up.
Bezos’ marketing plan worked so well that some people immediately wanted to know what kind of car it was. We’re talking about the R1T, the pick-up truck from US start-up Rivian. And this is no pure coincidence. Amazon’s owner is one of the investors in the project, started by Robert Scaringe in 2009. Today, the electric vehicle manufacturer is one of the most promising out there and will be the first to put a 100% electric pick-up truck on the market.
The model is 5.5 metres long and 2.1 metres wide. This is a vehicle with plenty of cargo space, versatility and comfort for leisure trips, with a range of 400 kilometres.Rivian excels in having developed a standard platform which it has called "skateboard”. On it, it has concentrated all the main components, such as motors, batteries and transmission on a ‘board’ just below the wheel axle.
The interior design of the Rivian R1T follows a minimalist aesthetic with pleasing materials. The dashboard and parts of the steering wheel are lined with reclaimed wood. The seats are synthetic leather and the optional glass roof gives the car an airy feel.
The Rivian R1T’s real claim to functional creativity lies between the passenger compartment and the truck bed: the "gear tunnel”. This is a large hole in the middle of the vehicle with a door at each end. A long platform can slide out and be supported on a folding leg to make a seat. The Rivian R1T offers an electric "camping stove” and even has drawers to store pots, pans and cutlery. Spectacular, isn’t it?
