The future will be more than just electric
João Trincheiras
Corporate Communications Manager BMW Group Portugal
With growing concern about climate change, the world is becoming increasingly conscious about sustainability. The future is one of change and in mobility this is already clear to see, with the transition to sustainable mobility rapidly gaining momentum as we move towards a greener future.
The technology available to us and pressures from the authorities have favoured electric mobility. But at BMW Group we believe that the future will be diversified and not just about one technology. Traditional combustion engines will still be used for a few more years, especially in markets where the charging infrastructure is still not optimal. These engines continue to evolve and are increasingly environmentally friendly, and if we add synthetic fuels, we can further reduce the ecological footprint of these types of engines.
It is within this context that BMW Group is making its stand: while on the one hand we are developing and launching an increasing number of electric vehicles onto the market, on the other hand we are continuing to improve combustion engines and make them increasingly environmentally friendly.
At the same time, we are also exploring hydrogen, which we believe can play an important role in this sector. What we already know about hydrogen allows us to foresee several benefits, such as the fact that it is safe, has charging times and ranges similar to fossil fuels and works well at low temperatures. Distribution can also be facilitated by converting the existing fossil fuel network.
At BMW we know that there is no progress without innovation. Evolution in the automotive industry always begins by charting new territory. The recent hydrogen-powered BMW iX5 is an example of this and shows our commitment to the development of technology.
At BMW, we continue to improve performance in all our vehicles and to explore new worlds as we establish ourselves at the forefront of electric mobility. We believe that the future will be more than just electric, and rather one endowed with a wide range of technologies to suit the different needs of our customers. In each technology, we will have the same principle: to guarantee a premium driving experience, of constant excellence - and increasingly sustainable.
