The prestigious and award-winning interior designer from Madeira talks with TRENDS, reflecting on the design of outdoor living spaces. No space? No ideas? Nini Andrade explains how it’s done, because anyone who thinks that the secret lies in the placement of tables or chairs is mistaken... True transformation begins with us and the fantasy we create.

«In an outdoor space, a feeling of comfort and harmony is important»
You have made your name in homes and hotels all over the world. Tell us, what is the secret to creating a harmonious space?
I would say that the secret lies in the taste, commitment and resilience that we put into each project. The most important thing is to understand the client's message and know how to put it on paper. Being happy at work and in harmony with the team and clients is also part of that secret. I think that the harmony of spaces is something that comes from within and ends up being materialised in the different projects.
Is it a hard task to create a natural connection between the interior and exterior of the house?
No. Interior design is often responsible for the contrast created between the internal plasticity of spaces and the aesthetic rigour of their exterior. It is in the pursuit of the best of both worlds that the fusion between these arts finds true balance. Both disciplines, architecture and interior design, are closely related and go hand in hand. In actual fact, one depends on the other and together they are much stronger. Similarly, I understand that the combination of multidisciplinary and highly qualified teams makes it possible to implement projects that respond effectively and with quality to all the issues that arise when designing a space.
Is designing while respecting the site one of the maxims you follow religiously?
I always try to create an impact with my works, going beyond the source of inspiration, so that they acquire their own autonomy and life. That is why I always associate my work with the local context, reinventing the perspective and absorbing the places where my works grow. It is important to strive for balance, whenever it is justified and makes sense in terms of concept and the commission itself.
This summer, what are the latest trends for a beautiful and comfortable outdoor retreat?
I tend to say that I don't follow trends because I always try to create them. In an outdoor space, the feeling of comfort and harmony is important. Lightness, light colours, natural textures and muted patterns are essential ingredients.

What are the things that should not be omitted in the outdoor area?
I would say that the chaise lounges from the Garota do Calhau outdoor collection are pieces that shouldn’t be overlooked, as they make the space by themselves. Lots of cushions, shading systems and side tables will provide unforgettable moments.
What materials do you usually choose to create an outdoor area?
Natural materials, such as wicker, or more durable materials, such as rattan. Wood is also an option, along with textiles.
Name three tips to help make the best use of space in your home's outdoor areas.
If the space is small, there are some tips that will completely transform it. For example, tall slender trees, vertical water features and the use of mirrors outside is always magical.
Terrace, courtyard or balcony? Courtyard.
Natural or synthetic grass? Natural.
Large or small pool? Large.
With or without barbecue? With barbecue, as long as it is well done (it is always very elegant).
Neutral or bright colours? Neutral, with splashes of colour.
Sofas, pouffes or armchairs? Each piece has its right place.
Natural or artificial flowers? Natural.
